What the UK Standard Visitor Visa actually is

The Standard Visitor visa replaced more than a dozen older tourist categories (general visitor, family visitor, business visitor, etc.) on 24 April 2015. It is a short-stay, multiple-entry visa that lets you:

• Holiday in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland (including on a cruise that docks in the UK)
• Attend a wedding, graduation or family event
• Do a short recreational course (up to 30 days, e.g. a one-week cookery class)
• Receive private medical treatment (up to 6 months)
• Do certain business tasks (meetings, site visits, signing contracts, speaking at a conference) as long as you are not paid by a UK source
• Transit through a UK airport (if you pass through UK border control)

It does not allow paid or unpaid work, running a business, living in the UK through frequent visits, getting public funds, marrying or giving notice of marriage (use the Marriage Visitor visa instead).

Who qualifies – the six legal tests

Paragraph V 4.2 of the Immigration Rules requires you to satisfy the Entry Clearance Officer that you are a genuine visitor. Translation: you must show ALL of the following.

1. Leave at the end of your visit – return ticket, job, family, property, study commitments.
2. Can support yourself (and dependants) without working or claiming benefits.
3. Can pay for your return or onward journey.
4. Will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits.
5. Will only carry out permitted activities.
6. Criminal history, previous breaches or adverse immigration history do not make your presence a risk.

Standard processing window

UKVI service standard is 15 working days (≈ 3 weeks) after biometrics in most countries. Add postage time if you did not keep your passport. During peak summer and December the Delhi, Abu Dhabi and Lagos hubs can take 25-30 WD unless you buy priority.

   • Student: enrolment letter, term dates, academic record, fee receipts.

8. Proof of accommodation: hotel booking with full address, or invitation letter + host's passport/BRP + utility bill or council tax bill.
9. Travel plans: day-by-day itinerary and return/onward flight booking (fully flexible tickets are fine).Tuberculosis certificate if you have lived > 6 months in a country listed in Appendix T.
10. Translations: any document not in English/Welsh must be translated by a certified translator with date, signature and statement "This is an accurate translation of the original".

Dependant applicants need marriage/birth certificates plus the above for the sponsor.

Bank statements – the rules that get people refused

UKVI does not publish a minimum balance, but officers apply a pro-rata cost test. Work on:

1. Create account on https://www.gov.uk/standard-delivery/apply and choose country of application.

7. If I get a 10-year visa, can I stay in the UK for 10 years?

No. Each individual visit must not exceed 6 months. Living in the UK by "visa runs" will lead to cancellation at the border.
